Spirit Runner Chapter 2 – Etowah

Etowah is a fictional Este town often featured in the Rootstock Saga. Over most of the years I spent writing these novels, the town’s name was Hialeah. But at some point, I decided to rename it to match the image I referenced more than any other.

As noted earlier, the Este are not a representation of any one particular Native American people, place, or culture. This is not historical fiction.

But if you’re intrigued by history, you’ll should read more about the Mississippian Period site in what is now North Georgia.

The description of the palisade walls came from images of the Kincaid Mounds in Southern Illinois.

If you happen to be visiting Atlanta, several of these historic sites are within driving distance.

  • Etowah near Cartersville (about 1 hour) see map
  • Ocmulgee near Macon (about 1.5 hours) see map
  • Kolomoki near Columbus (about 3.5 hours) see map

Etowah is a depiction of “what if” not “what was.”

What if the Este Nation of the future were influenced by the memories of those who lived here eons before them?

What aspects of our experience would they adapt as their own?

How might the whispered warnings of the ancients guide them down different paths?
