Prisoner
Excerpt from Path of the Spirit Runner, Isobel chapter.
Alone in a dark room, Isobel ached from a beating she couldn’t recall. She strained to hear the rushing waters of Glenayre, but the eerie quiet told her she was far from home.
Isobel is imprisoned for sorcery after Red Watch soldiers see her use her healer’s empathy to save a newborn child.
Isobel hugged her knees to her chest, trying to calm her pounding heart. An old fear crept back, a fear she thought she’d forgotten. Alone in the dark, she was a child again, cowering in a closet, hiding from the Beast of Monaughty. She rocked in the darkness for what might have been hours until irritation crept in to taint her terror. She’d done no wrong. They held her without cause. Irritation became indignation, and she pushed herself to her feet.
“I survived the beast. I will survive you.”
She’s not the frightened child anymore. Her spirit was bent but never broken. The strength simmering insider her is within her reach.
The Prophet may have met his match.
