geddar
A stringed instrument commonly played in Rhynn. The earliest known geddars appear in ancient Aurel paintings from the Shandalar period.
Not a lute. Not a mandolin. The Rhynn geddar is, as its similarity in name implies, more comparable to the six-string acoustic guitar of our cycle.
It’s a uniquely Aurel instrument in the Rootstock Saga world, an intentionally familiar. Laradians, Surdisi, and Firstborn don’t play geddar.
Music is ingrained in the Aleron lifestyle,
Hawks did love their music. It seemed everyone in Aleron played fiddles or drums, flutes or geddars. When Seth rosined a bow and joined in, Isobel couldn’t have been more surprised if he’d sprouted wings.
Isobel noticed the importance of music to the Clans of the Hawk at her first Aleron Conclave.
Evenings are for feasting and dancing. Many Hawks are talented singers and musicians. Even with Seth’s encouragement, I could not find the courage to sing before so many, but he joined the other fiddlers without hesitation. Lady Marjory said all young Hawks learn music along with their reading and mathematics
Flutes, fiddles, drums, and geddars. The music of life. Of a culture too rich to be diluted. Too vibrant to fade.
And, to be honest, I could not resist the image of our quasi-medieval band rocking out to a killer riff.
