Dragons of Wales: Kazera

Scrolling through my (now obligatory) Twitter feed late one night, I froze on an eye-catching post from @Dragonsofwales.

Dragons of Wales. Kickstarter.

These creatures looked real. Real, as in could-step-off-the-page real. Living and breathing, here in this world, with us. These were the feathered dinosaurs, the remnants of dragonkind as I had long imagined they might have looked.

Four limbs. None of that annoying “sprouting extra wings on your back” nonsense. Iridescent feathers on leathery wings. Expressive faces that seemed on the cusp of speaking. Sentient.

Mesmerizing.

These creatures were the closest to any dragonkind kindred of the kazera I’d found, no doubt. Most of the Dragons of Wales were smaller. Some almost birdlike.

But there was no missing the dragon fierceness in any of them.

I so wanted to brawn one of these magnificent creatures up a notch.

So, I contacted Andy on Etsy and asked if he would consider a commissioned work. He agreed and I proceeded to send him excerpts from Rootstock Saga descriptions of the kazera.

A lot of excerpts. And a few close-but-not-quite images I’d used during the writing.

It was information overload, bordering on T.M.I.

Obsession with detail to the point I’m glad he didn’t write me off as some random internet crazy better avoided than appeased.

But I just had to see what he’d make of the kazera.

He nailed it.
