breclan

The breclan is a distinctive feature of traditional Rhynn clothing, commonly worn by men of all social ranks. A banner hung from the belt by loops or fastened with grommets, it can be as simple as a kerchief bearing the wearer’s clan colors. Most breclans bear at least a rudimentary representation of the wearer’s clan heraldry, or sigil, as well.

Dating back to the earliest Aurel historical relics, the breclan appears on the oldest clay figures discovered to date, those from Nottely archeological site near Chatham, Camran.

Most scholars agree the breclan is a symbolic adaptation of the breechcloth, having evolved as a means of identifying fellow tribe members during the heat of battle.

The Redmist breclan design is the form most favored by Rhynn chieftans, their kin, or by any Rhynn with means enough to commission a special breclan for formal occasions. The design consists of both a front and back panel and is generally fashioned from heavier material than the underlying tunic, often of hand-crafted embroidery or tapestry weave.

During the height of the Rhynn Repression period, Innish laws were enacted to forbid embellishing the breclan with designs of any form, in a misguided attempt to dilute the ties of clan fealty amongst those of Aurel decent.

Their breclan ban didn’t work out quite as intended.
